Acronyms and terms and definitions oh my

ChCh = Christ Church, NZ

155 = Building 155 (This video starts with a good bit about Building 155 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hww2trxgLo&t=8s)

Winfly = Winter Fly-In (military term)

Gallager’s Pub = One of two bars at McMurdo Station. Originally known as the Erebus Club, it was established as a proper pub in 1997 and named in memory of Chuck Gallagher, an Antarctic worker who passed away during a winter-over shift at the base. Food: On select nights, volunteer workers fire up the grills to cook classic pub burgers and fare for the community. The “Non-Smoking” Alternative: Historically, while Southern Exposure was infamous as the raucous, smoke-filled venue, Gallagher’s was celebrated as the clean, non-smoking option. Entertainment: It is the premier spot on the station for organized events, featuring live music, karaoke nights, and popular Monday night trivia quizzes. https://www.facebook.com/p/Gallaghers-Pub-Antarctica-100063824821648/

Southern’s = Southern Exposure (often called “Southern’s”) is one of the two primary social bars and lounges at McMurdo Station, the largest U.S. research facility in Antarctica. Atmosphere: Historically known as the station’s relaxed “smoking bar” and a favorite gathering spot for tradespeople, researchers, and support staff after long shifts, it remains a cornerstone of the off-hours community life on the ice. Seasonal Use: It operates as a social bar during the busy summer months and transitions into a relaxed community lounge during the dark winter-over period. Amenities: The space features a pool table, shuffleboard, foosball, a dartboard, a TV, and seating areas for socializing. Beverages: While it historically served alcoholic drinks, National Science Foundation (NSF) policy changes enacted in late 15, 2023 banned direct alcohol sales at McMurdo’s bars. Workers can no longer purchase drinks over the counter there, but they are still permitted to bring their own BYOB alcohol or enjoy non-alcoholic options like coffee and espresso.

Fuelies = the fuels operators and technicians responsible for managing, maintaining, and distributing the critical fuel supply at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Fuel Transfers: Move fuel from storage tanks to the power plant, the galley, the Hilo pad, and remote airfields like Willie Field. Mobile Delivery: Operate heavy-duty mobile delivery vehicles and fuel trucks across the station and surrounding areas. Field Camp Support: Prepare, store, and transport fuel drums and set up long-distance portable fuel lines for remote scientific camps and aircraft. System Maintenance: Maintain the station’s extensive network of fuel tanks, pumps, and specialized cold-weather hoses

Wasties = the affectionate nickname given to the waste management crew at McMurdo Station. Operating under the strict environmental mandates of the international Antarctic Treaty, this dedicated team ensures that human presence leaves as close to zero impact as possible on the pristine polar environment

The Ice shelf = the portion of the Ross Ice Shelf bounded by McMurdo Sound and Ross Island on the north and Minna Bluff on the south.

McMurdo Sound = a sound (a smaller body of water usually connected to a sea or an ocean) in Antarctica, known as the southernmost passable body of water in the world, located approximately 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) from the South Pole. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMurdo_Sound

Toesies = toes

The vehicles (as good as I could come up with via some Googling):

Delta Liz / Delta Scharen = In polar logistics (such as USAP/McMurdo operations), “Delta Scharen” and related configurations refer to the operations or hardware setup of heavy fuel delivery transport equipment (e.g., fuel delivery trucks or “Gashoppers”). In broader European mechanical terms, Delta-Scharen translates to delta-shaped plowshares/wings used for moving soil or compacting terrain.

Juice Moose = A nickname often used by logistics crews for specialized fleet vehicles, or in a broader winter trail maintenance context, a playful reference to a vehicle or additive handling trail-clearing or multi-terrain mud and snow maintenance.

The Polaris = A prominent variant designation of heavy-duty polar tractors (such as the PistenBully 600 Polar) engineered specifically with massive thrust and high-altitude climbing capabilities for extreme deep-snow and Antarctic traversal.

Pisten Bully = The premier global brand of tracked snowcat and snow-grooming vehicles. In polar operations, these machines are vital for smoothing skiways for supply aircraft, carving out heavily drifted snow around research stations, and flattening traverse routes.
